The Best Helicopter Tour Experience in Maui, Hawaii

I recently checked “flying in a helicopter” with Air Maui off the bucket list! We decided to start this adventure on the first official day of our Hawaiian vacation so that we can see Maui from above before exploring it on the ground. After doing a bit of research, we decided to book with Air Maui. This company offers different tours of Maui. We initially booked the 1-hour complete tour of the island. But because of the weather, we took a different tour that completely blew our minds. Read below for which tour we ended up going on! With that said, I want to share my experience with Air Maui in case you were considering this tour for yourself and your family.

tip: If you experience motion sickness, make sure to take non-drowsy motion sickness medicine like Dramamine.

Air Maui is located at the Kahului airport. If you put “Air Maui” into your GPS, you’ll be directed to the exact location. There is free parking in case you rent a car. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff to sign in to our appointment. And yes, you’ll need to make an appointment in advance so you don’t miss out on the tour.

tip: They have great deals online, so make sure to take advantage of their specials. Because this tour isn’t cheap. Also, feel free to give them a call. with any questions. Their customer service is awesome.

Once our appointment time came closer, we were given safety belts and we watched an instructional video. Our helicopter tour was doors-on but Air Maui also offers a doors-off tour which sounds scary but amazing!

Once we were lined up and ready to go, we were told that the weather and clouds would hinder us from seeing Maui from above. So instead of taking the tour of the complete island of Maui, we agreed on going to the west side of Maui and taking another route to the island of Moloka’i. If you’ve never heard of Moloka’i before, it’s a remote island that allows tourists although it’s more remote compared to the other islands. What makes Moloka’i special besides its natural beauty, is that it’s home to the highest sea cliffs in the world! Plus the longest continuous fringing reef!

Moloka’i

Our helicopter pilot shared incredible stories about the history of Moloka’i. He even took us close to all of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii. One amazing thing about helicopter rides is that you really appreciate the natural beauty of Hawaii from a bird’s eye view. It’s spectacular.

At the end of the tour, I love that they had an option to give us a copy of our ride from the 3 cameras on the helicopter for us to enjoy and re-experience. Although I will say, the video isn’t the highest definition. Personally, it was worth the extra cost even though I would 100% ride with Air Maui again in the future!
